Official statement by the HIP Alliance on the racist comments made by Mr Adam Catzavelos
The Hellenic, Italian and Portuguese (HIP) Alliance was established in the South African democratic era to contribute towards building a non-racist, non-sexist, democratic and socially cohesive South African society. HIP collaborates with a number of like-minded organisations in pursuit of this objective.
It is therefore with the greatest disappointment that HIP learnt of the unfortunate, hurtful and deplorable racial utterances of Mr. Adam Catzavelos, a South African, made whilst he was visiting Greece. To this end, the HIP Alliance categorically distances itself from Mr. Catzavelos comments, which we view as irresponsible and dehumanizing to many of our fellow South Africans. Whilst we are of the view that Mr. Catzavelos utterances are in the minority, they do nonetheless highlight the need for all of us to redouble our efforts at building a non-racist, non-sexist, democratic South Africa that we can all be proud of.
This ideal goes hand in hand with addressing our country’s triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment, all challenges that the HIP Alliance will continue seizing itself with, together with other like-minded partners.
